We are left in the dark many times when it comes to fruit that other countries have. It seems like every few months or so we hear about fruit that another part of the world grows. These fruits are exotic to us and have many health benefits. When I was growing up, all I can remember is apples, oranges, bananas, strawberries, blue berries, raspberries, watermelon, and cantaloupe. I am not sure if this was because these were what my parents liked or if that is all the store had to offer.
One of the fruits that came to light for me within the last few years was the Acai berry. By now we are well versed on the nutrition that these little berries offer our bodies. Let me introduce you to another berry, the Maqui Berry. This berry is pretty exclusive to regions in Chile. These barriers are not grown in large fields by farmers or ranchers; they grow wild on bushes along roadsides and hills. The berries are vibrant purple and easy to spot.
There is a group of natives in the region called the Mapuche. They harvest the berries in large quantities. Because the Mapuche tribe are known as fierce warriors, they believed these berries gave them strength and stamina. They also believed that the berry heals and therefore used it as medicine.
The anthocyanin in the berry is a strong antioxidant. Antioxidants fight off free radicals that destroy cells in the body. A special kind of antioxidant in the berry helps with inflammation and inhibits the growth of colon cancer cells. Another type of antioxidants that are found in the berry help with cholesterol, which in turn helps fight off heart disease.
Maqui berry has also been known to even out blood sugars and evening out energy. This also helps with preventing new fat cells. Although further testing needs to be done, this magnificent berry may be used for weight loss.
It is a no brainer when we considered adding this to our African Mango blend. We carefully study our ingredients before including them on our blends to insure that you get the best that the earth has to offer.
