Mind Over Matter

Vince Lombardi once said “The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather in a lack of will.” We are all fully capable of setting goals and reaching them, but what is it in our lives that make us feel like we aren’t ready?  You’ve heard it a million times; your body is more physically able than the mind thinks it is. The mind makes you believe that you’re heart is about to explode and jump out of your chest or you’re going to stop breathing and go into shock, when in all reality you’re body can most likely push through another two or three miles on the track. So if this is true, why do we give up?

According to Tom Connellan, the author of “The 1 Percent Solution: How to Make Your Next 30 Days the Best Ever “Peak Performance Press, 2011, just one week into January, 25 percent of New Year’s resolutions are nothing more than a memory. The prospect for keeping a resolution throughout the year are even more bleak, Connellan said. He estimates that by the time we ring in 2013, 88 percent of New Year’s resolutions will have been broken. ¹ Broken New Year’s resolutions can simply just be because of unrealistic goals, not having the will to change, or even just being a little bit too drunk to remember them. Other reasons why people don’t stick with a resolution might lie within the person’s lifestyle and the people around them.

If your family and friends are not aware of your weight loss goals, or don’t respect them, then it’s harder to stick to it. When their idea of having “fun” involves eating out on a regular basis, going to the bar, or even a simple get together that involves cocktails and tons of delicious hors d’œuvres, this can have an impact on your goals. We all want to enjoy ourselves, but we need to keep in mind the end results and what keeps us motivated. You need to remind those around you of your goals and if they can’t respect your goals then they don’t respect you, and maybe it’s time you spend some time apart.

While you can turn to your friends and family for support, you can’t rely on them for everything. You need to help yourself and prepare yourself to achieve your goals. Clean out your pantry, fridge, and storage. You don’t need unnecessary temptations lying around. Find a local gym and get a membership. Get yourself and your body on a schedule, set your alarm for the same time every morning and go to sleep the same time every night. If your gym has classes, plan ahead the classes you are going to be attending. Do whatever it takes to keep you motivated.

How to Beat Cellulite


You can’t avoid it, and you keep trying to make up excuses, telling yourself that it’s normal and that a ton of women have it. Which is true, but is there anything you can do about it? Cellulite is not a pretty site. It can make any woman feel less beautiful and self conscious about their body, even if you’re in shape and healthy. I know we’ve always been told there is no cure and that there is nothing you can do to reduce the cottage cheese spreading up your thigh, or is there?

The fat that causes us to gain weight is far below your skin, and is what out body burns as fuel for energy. Cellulite is made up of fat cells that reside in the skin. They can’t be burned as fuel, that’s why exercise, liposuction, and even dieting won’t help.

Cellulite can develop at any age. Hormones could be a key reason, along with genetics, to this not so cute problem. To make things even more complicated, the circulatory system that feeds the skin cells and lymph vessels tend to get damaged over time, which makes cellulite more apparent.

If you’re looking for a cheap alternative, there are some lotions and cream that can stimulate cell circulation, melt fat, and move fluid and toxins out to reduce signs of cellulite. Although these alternatives are never permanent, it is worth a try to keep it under control and reduce its appearance.

Caffeine creams tend to work great to pull fluids out of the cells and induce fat burning in the layer right below the skin, therefore smoothing out the bumps. Methylxanthines, a form of caffeine, is found in a lot of these creams. The higher the amount of methylxanthine, the better the cream will work. The process to visibly reduce cellulite is about 8 weeks.

Another Option:

Eat a diet that “feeds” the skin. This can help with making cell membranes strong and keeps the cellulite from creeping to the surface.

Medical Related Options:

TriActive- TriActive uses light energy to melt cellulite while massaging the skin to increase circulation and encourage drainage of lymph vessels. It is FDA approved, and it also relies on a laser light. It seems to me like it would be a pretty decent alternative if you’re willing to spend over $1,000 dollars.

Endermologie- A deep massage that uses rollers to suction to affect the skin’s connective tissue, stimulates blood flow, and lymphatic drainage, and triggers the body’s natural system for eliminating fat from cells. Once again, another pricey investment, but might be worth a try.

There are some other options out there like using retinol cream (typically used in wrinkle creams) that are supposed to help with tightening up skin cells, so it might be worth a shot. But overall, staying fit and eating a well balanced diet will help keep cellulite under control. Most of these treatments do not permanently erase cellulite, but will help reduce the appearance of it.
